I could seriously write a book on this, shoot maybe I should! But that idea is for another time. Right here, and right now, I want to write about one of the leading killers of self esteem, a factor of procrastination, the leading cause of not thinking your good enough, and one of the major issues in today's ever changing society.......social comparison.
For those who are unfamiliar let me get you informed, social comparison theory states that we determine our own social and personal worth based on how we stack up to others. What does that all mean? It basically means we measure where we are in our own lives by comparing ourselves to others, instead of our past selves and working toward becoming a better version of us for us!
Comparison can truly be a killer, to our self esteem our confidence, and can result in us downplaying the strides we have made in our lives.....if we let it. Now I will testify that I used to compare myself to others, I sure did.
I would see my peers, college friends, etc living their best lives! It would make me think, dang they are out here slaying their goals, making money moves, making their dreams come true this is great to see! After hearing about all the amazing things they were doing (or seeing it on social media) I would feel a certain way about where I was in my life and begin to compare where I am to where they are in there lives. Now don't get me wrong I am in no way shape or form a hater, I genuinely love seeing people progress, but I found myself measuring what someone else's progress was to my own and honey that just is not healthy or fair to yourself!
You cannot compare yourself to someone else! Ever! Everyone's situations and lives are different okay! Yes we all have the same 24 hours but we all do not have the same schedules and lifestyles as the next person. As long as you are working towards your goals everyday, truly putting a 100% in, even when you don't feel like it, and grinding your ass off to get to where you want to be.....that is more than enough! You are more than enough! You just have to remind yourself of that!
If all you find yourself doing when on social media is comparing yourself to others, based of a picture and a caption no less, please stop yourself! Now if you are truly happy for someone then yes congratulate them, if you want to know how they got to where they are, message them! If you may be working on the same goals as they are, let their progress be fuel to your fire to go harder for everything you want out of life! But don't be a secret hater because you are not where you want to be yet and please don't compare yourself to someone else and their journey.
Don't let you not being where you want to be in life right now stop you from putting in the work at this very moment. So many people want to skip the work and just get to the goal, well how do you think you are going to get there? By doing the work! Some people want the the glamour, pictures, titles, and accolades, but not the hard work that requires success. Make the sacrifices, put in the extra time, effort, and persistence! When you have that tunnel vision and really want to make things happen in your life you won't have time to even think of comparing yourself to anybody but the past version of yourself okay!
So please let us not compare ourselves to others, and when we catch ourselves doing so, let us remind ourselves that we are good enough and we are working on slaying our goals just like the next person. Ask yourself, why would you want someone else's life anyways? Your journey was specially designed for you so enjoy the process!
As always, work on becoming the best version of yourself and remind yourself that you are your only competition!
